Chapter 9: HRM Revision Questions

For this section, i will share you a revision question in chapter 9.

  1. What are some of the important aspects of an organization’s disciplinary system?
    • Oral Warning – as soon as employer perceives employee’s performance problem, he/she should issue an oral reprimand. Oral warnings should be combined with counselling and documented.
    • First Written Warning – If the problem persists, employer should provide with a written warning detailing the objectionable behaviour, along with the consequences. Specify time frames performance, and state that continued failure will result in termination.
    • Final Written Warning – If performance does not improve, deliver final warning letter. Include copies of the previous warnings, indicate specific areas in which the employee must improve and specify time period within which the employee’s behaviour or performance must be corrected.
    • Suspension without pay – employee can be suspended without pay if there is a clause in their contract of employment giving the employer the right to impose this penalty.
    • Demotion or downgrading – It will be feasible in circumstances where the employee is in a graded job. In this situation, employer may choose to punish employee by demoting him/her down one or more grades.
    • Termination – Only after the employer had completed all these steps, she/he should go ahead with firing the employee.
  2. What are the consequences of retrenchment to both employers and employees?
    • Employer
      • Lowered morale amongst remaining workers
      • Loss of public confidence
      • High short-term expenditure
    • Employee
      • Financial problems
      • Psychological stress
      • Ill health
  3. What can organizations do to avoid retrenching workers?
    • Freeze all recruitment for vacant posts
      • Whenever there is vacancy, no new recruit is to be taken from outside. Instead, one of the redundant workers should be transferred to this job and given whenever retraining necessary.
    • Voluntary separation scheme (vss)
      • A VSS encourages workers to resign or retire early.
    • Consults employee to stop overtime working, reduce shift allowance, change working arrangements and reduce shift patterns
    • Reduce electricity by switching off air conditioner, lights and electrical appliances
